I rented a Nikon 300mm F2.8G VR lens today for an airshow this weekend. Unfortunately I don’t have any cars lined up to photograph so it’ll be mostly airshow shots with this guy. Unless of course you guys really want a Prius shot.

What’s it like being a hero for using a lens like that?

Yeah, it's pricey, but good if you want to test stuff or only need a lens for one event.

You know... never considered renting for events... that is a great idea.

I will! I’ve been reading up on the do’s and don’ts of airshow photos this past week, so I hope I can get some keepers. I also rented a Nikon AF-S TC2.0 III to go with it (makes it a 600 mm F5. 6) , which should help with reach (I don’t have particularly good seating, I didn’t pay for the better ones as I’m going as a family trip with my in-laws). I found out later on that Nikon is sponsoring the show, and if you book really early (December) you can get into that section which covers food, drinks, parking, and gets you access to gear to use for free. I’ll be looking into that next year if this year goes well (and they sponsor again).

Yeah, it’s handy for that one time you’d like to use a piece of glass that is priced way out of your range, li ke having an dram of a $20-30 dollar scotch/oz , instead of buying the bottle for $350. Full Disclosure, this lens was $75 CAD a day, but you do have to put a deposit down that is full retail value ($6400 CAD for this guy). Be smart, and you’ll have a good time. Be dumb, and you just bought a $6400 paperweight.

I have that lens too (not the cup, the real one). At one point I wanted that cup, but once you have the real thing, you can’t go back to drinking out of a fake.

It is, just double check the rules and what not. Document the whole thing at the store when you pick it up too, don’t want to get dinged for a mark you didn’t make.

EDIT: Also, you have Lens Rentals in the states, which is a seriously nice service to use. I wish I had access to them, they have a huge selection to choose from.

How do you shoot with that? Do you have a tripod setup?

For airshows, Monopods are king. Tripods are too slow to pan with the plans, and take up more space around your feet. You can also hold a lens this size for a few shots when the monopod isn’t working or the right angle, but only a few shots.

Well it’s not in yet, as you can see in the photo, I’m still at work. you’ll be able to hear the screaming once I do mount it though.

With that focal distance, you don’t need to line up any cars. Just shoot them from a hillside!

I really enjoy renting lenses. I rented a Canon 11-24mm a while back and it took some great photos. I do really want one someday but they’re still near $2k used.

Hmm, yes that is considerably larger than my DX 5 5-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR...

Hope you get to shoot some cool planes!

Nice! Widest I have is 16mm (16-35 F4). How was 11mm to frame? Catch your feet a lot?

Kinja'd!!!1

Remember your 300mm is 450 to me (FX). Crop bodies are really advantages when it comes to reach. A D500  and a 300mm F4 is a deadly light weight combination.

Nice! well I’ll be sure to post up some shots once I take them and put them through the digital dark room. Really hoping I can keep up with the jets and get some solid offerings. I mean, if I don’t at least I can stop myself from saving up for a super tele- prime.

Seems like a fun toy for the weekend. Where did you rent it from? I’ve never rented a lens yet but could see it being nice before investing in better glass. Also drift Prius for your time

I rented it from a shop in Vancouver called Beau Photo. Bought a lens (used) from them before and was happy with their service.

I'm curious to see your results. I shot an airshow for fun with some friends about a decade ago. I only had my 70-200 to shoot with as I had lent my 100-400 to a family member. The planes were close enough during most flights for decent shots, but I imagine that 600mm will net some really, really nice shots. Have fun!

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, my plan is start with my 70-200 and just see how close I am (I don’t have “photographer zone” seats). Then i’ll use the 300 at 300 and see if it’s enough reach. If not or if there is shots I want with more frame filled i’ll throw  on the TC2.0III.

You’ll get some nice cockpit shots with the 600, for sure.
